Reading the Names of God Aloud
I was giving the charge a few years back to start a new ministry. It happened because Paula Hemphill came and spoke to the Women’s Ministry Leadership Team about a healthy Women’s Ministry. I had helped Mary N. put the meeting together. Paula asked a question and I wish I had a picture of my face as her words penetrated my heart. I saw Mary’s and we didn’t have to speak. We wanted to hang out heads. She asked us what we are doing to promote evangelism in our Women’s Ministry. We knew the answer; nothing. Shortly after that meeting I step out of Women’s Ministry for 3 months. I was burnt out. It proved to be a very beneficial time, not unlike what I am going through now, that is, a time of discovery. It is hard for some one like me to not be up to my neck in ministry, but God has a way of sidelining us and he always had purpose in it. I used those three months wisely to pray and discover what God had in store for me. Before I knew it I was putting together a Women’s Evangelism Team. But before that happened or as it happened we went though a process similar to what I was going through personally. We came up with a planning retreat called Discoverer and Plan. It was open to all women in the church but geared for leadership. Thirty women leaders came and we spent Friday night in pray and praise to allow for God to speak to our hearts. The next day we had Shirley Moses from Grayson County Baptist Association tell us How to Start a Women’s Evangelism Team. Shirley lives and breathes evangelism. Then we spilt up into our areas of service and planned how to incorporate evangelism into our ministries. I took the women who stepped forward to begin our Women’s Evangelism Team.
I was reminded of what happened at the Discovery and Plan Seminar during the Friday night session when I was transcribing Dr. Hall’s sermon on Praying in the Name of Jesus, Part 1. I was thinking about the question, do we know the Names of God and their significance? That night we said the Names of God aloud. I planned the exercise, but something else happened that no one expected. I guess I just didn’t explain the directions well enough. We had a basket with the names of God printed on them. We were to take turns pulling one from the basket and reading it aloud. The ladies could not just say the name. They began to testify, tell stories of what the Name meant to them and cry and praise God. We went over time and silly me worried. I was afraid people would be upset because we would get out late. They didn’t want to stop. We went into a time of silent reflection and then into small groups to share and then a large group. It was amazing. People were hungry to share God’s Name. It was like we really tapped into something. I think we know God’s name, we just need to share. I think if we begin to share his name like that it will open a flood gate. If you ever get a chance talk to one of the women who sewed the banners we have at church. The banners bear the Names of God. They will gladly speak of the amazing things that happened as they created and sewed the designs.
