The Light
“But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin”. 1 John 1:7
I opened the blinds to the afternoon sun. As the light streamed into the room it exposed the dust and clutter that had accumulated over the months. I was cleaning my sewing room, where I sew almost every day. I often tell my children while excusing the mess, “creativity is messy.” Now there was plenty of evidence for that creativity around the room.
A friend had recently requested help from me for a quilting project she had begun. Twice I had denied her access to the room, “Not yet, I explained, “still looks like a fabric warehouse exploded,” I joked.
I was uncomfortable in my messiness. I just wasn’t sure I wanted her to see this particular side of me. I decided I needed to clean.
Now there is cleaning where you pick up after each day and then there is deep cleaning. For me, the later though strenuous, leaves me feeling content and confident to have people over. There is nothing to hide, no room they can’t enter. Like my room, we need to daily cleanse ourselves from the dirt and clutter of sin. The scriptures say we are the dwelling place of the living God. In response to that we need to daily confess our sins, but there are also times that call for a deeper cleaning; a time where we need to look long and hard at ourselves as we are exposed in the light of the Word of God. It is then we can relax and fellowship together as we should without fear.
